Spotlight

Kimono, a characteristic element of Japan's cultural heritage, overflows with various ideas and hints that are also familiar to contemporary dress. This exhibition focuses on the appeal of kimonos as "fashion" itself, not solely as a way of artistic expression. From ancient to modern times, the kimono of women who shone in each era are reproduced  and tell the history of the rich culture of dress. The highly curated exhibition coordinates traditional colors, patterns, layering cloths, obi-bands, accoutrements etc. and is filled with unprecedented fresh surprises and discoveries. From this point you will see hints of dressing in the past leading to the future.

A comprehensive and innovative view of the kimono history from the approach of "fashion".

The costumes of the Nara period up to the late Edo period, in possession of the Kyoto Dyeing and Weaving Cultural Association, were precisely reproduced in the early Showa period through collaboration of the highest researchers and the best craftsmen of dyeing and weaving at the time. Under the supervision of Akiko Fukai, these kimonos are elaborately and stylishly exhibited on the mannequins along with accoutrements from each era. For the first time, the lively charm of the kimono is brought to light as each particular way of wearing the kimono in vogue is displayed. Also on view are wedding kimonos with photographs worn in actuality in the Taisho and the Showa period, courtesy of the Chiso co,.. In addition, in lieu of the kimono of the future, we will show off a new work produced for this exhibition by Yuima Nakazato, a rising fashion designer. We present not only images and sounds, but also an exhibition you can experience through olfactory stimulation.
